Prairie Artisan Ales Birra
By: Eric Sturniolo
I fell in love with Prairie Artisan Ales when I visited Torst for their Bible Belt release party, where I had my first taste of Bomb, Prairie Ale, and Bible Belt (a collaboration with Evil Twin). Unfortunately, Prairie wasn’t being distributed in New York City yet, but owner/brewer Chase Healey assured me he was on the case. And he did it… in the past few weeks, some bottles and kegs have been showing up around the city! I snagged some bottles of Birra the first chance I got.
Birra, a saison/farmhouse ale comes in at 4.2% ABV and is one of the better new beers I’ve had in a long time. It has the classic farmhouse tastes of lemon, orange, peppercorn, grass, and banana. Slightly funky, very bubbly, and very dry, it leaves a refreshing yeasty crispness on the tongue after each sip. It’s easy to drink and goes great with food. Pick up a bottle and enjoy it with dinner as soon as you can!
